One Goal Down

It looks like I've gotten an article accepted by the Lutheran Witness! They are running a feature on Service men in their Feb/Mar issue and I submitted a manuscript late in December. I just got an email today with some copy editing corrections, so I'm guessing that means I'm in. Hooray! Kir

Hello Kirstin! Thank you for inviting me to this wonderful alumni blog!! It is great to have a forum where we can all keep in touch with each other. I was sorry I could not be at the residency to participate in your workshop! Congratulations on publishing your article! That is fantastic. I am sure you will accomplish all the goals you have set down to achieve.

I finally remembered my Google password!!!

Congrats, Kir. My theory of positive karma in 2008 continues. This is such great news. Please make sure to post a link or if possible post a pdf so we can read the article.

When did you squeeze this one in while finishing your novel?

Hi Anne,

It was just something I heard about from my dad, I came up with a spin on the assignment, emailed the contact at the Lutheran Witness, and she loved the idea. So I called my dad, grandpa, and brothers that night and got interviews, then wrote the article that night and sent it in. It was a very quick deal. Exciting though.

Kir,
I bet there are a lot of religious and faith magazines and publications looking for mainstream articles. This could be a great place to market an occasional piece. It would be interesting to research that market. I bet it's a bigger market than you might think.

Ron has a good point. If you put in variations of "submission guidelines christian magazines" or "submission guidelines spiritual magazines" you should come up with a lot. There are some if you Google "submission guidelines women's magazines". I just did the latter today and came up with a slew of pubs I want to try to place some essays in to help build my clips and credentials. Took a couple of hours but time well worth it.

Actually my (only) other pub credit is also from a religious magazine, which bought a short story I wrote a few years ago. I think in some ways it IS an easy market to break into, because as a Christian and as a Lutheran, I already have a toehold. That makes me more appealing to them; in fact, the Lutheran Witness says on their submissions page on the website that they will likely not publish work by an author who is not Lutheran.
